It’s safe to say that the holiday season indeed has begun!!
The holidays (unfortunately) conjure a lot of nutritionally charged emotions, concerns, fears and confusion among many of us. People tend to think that from October to January it’s not even worth keeping healthy habits going because, well, what’s the point with all the festivities? There are too many holiday parties to even keep straight, it’s offensive to say no to Aunt Charlotte’s questionable fruit cake even though it tastes like fruit-flavored cardboard, and for some reason it’s completely unimaginable to enjoy Thanksgiving without going into a food coma afterwards.
When did these assumptions take hold of our reality? They’re habits and expectations… that’s all. Not a manuscript on how to properly go through the motions of a standard holiday season always feeling bad about and try to correct come January 1st.
Introducing Happy (holiday) Hour 2018. HhH is a new way to think about the holiday season:
- Instead of accepting defeat for two months and then killing yourself at the gym for the entire month of January – likely to only be frustrated by lack of results – let’s get real and take a different course of action.
- Albert Einstein is credited with quoting the cliché, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Albeit over-used (and clearly not the true definition of insanity) it applies to what I’m talking about here. Why would you enter the holiday season this year the same way you did last year if you weren’t happy with the outcome then?
- Habits are hard to break. Expectations are hard to escape.
If you have read this far and already assumed that implementing this HhH is going to take all the fun and deliciousness out of the holidays, then clearly you don’t know me well enough because that’s not an option in my book.
Here is what I’m suggesting: let’s learn from each other. Here at The Moday Center we’ve built quite an amazing network of health professionals and people just like YOU that we are always learning from. We want you to share with us those tiny tips and tricks that you use during the holiday season to keep you grounded. Let’s learn from this community that we have created!
Every Thursday Afternoon during HhH I’ll be posting a personal favorite holiday recipe on my Instagram and Facebook page! Be sure to follow me to get access, and, here is where you come in… I want you to send over YOUR favorites too because, well, we’re in this together and I am continually amazed with recipes that y’all share with me.
… Snap a quick photo or send over the link to a delicious, healthified version of your favorite dish to bring to the holiday table! Like this recipe for Crunchy Coconut Greens that Jen sent me. She whips this up each week in a large batch to keep her greens intake up during the holidays! Seriously, what an awesome tip!
… Jot down a lesson that you’ve learned or was passed down to you that makes your holidays that much better. For example: did you successfully serve Uncle Joe (who wouldn’t eat a vegetable if you paid him) a sneaky avocado chocolate pudding that he now raves about and asks for every year?
… Just tag me @letsgetreal_rd and at Olivia Neely on Facebook and watch this seasonal eating guide develop on my Pinterest page that you can follow, watch grow and then use EVERY year as your go-to resource.
And remember to use the #lifecanfeelbetter!
